Sean Bowen is poised to end his injury nightmare and return next week to pursue a first jockeys’ title.

It seemed a formality before Christmas that Bowen would waltz away with the championship, given he had built up a lead of more than 30, but a crunching fall from Farren Glory at Aintree on Boxing Day threw everything into doubt.

Nearest rival and good friend Harry Cobden has made huge inroads into Bowen’s advantage.

Bowen said: ‘I’ve been in a brace but I’m allowed to take it off at the weekend. I feel really good. I’ve been doing lots on the knee and it’s getting stronger.

‘I’ll be coming for Cobden now! I built up a good lead so had the chance to have time off and come back in front. It’s very exciting.’
