TRAINER TO FOLLOW

CHARLIE APPLEBY has had 10 winners from his last 18 runners and the in-form trainer will be hoping Doncaster goes ahead with a big chance in the feature Group One race with ANCIENT WISDOM (Doncaster, 2.10) and unbeaten EDGE OF BLUE (Doncaster, 1.35).

BIG DAY FOR…

Jockey LEWIS EDMUNDS, 25, who gained his biggest success when the Roger Teal-trained Dancing Gemini won the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting by over four lengths. The rider, whose parents Jason and Clare were jockeys and whose grandfather John Balding trained not far from the track, partners DANCING GEMINI (Doncaster, 2.10) in the Group One Kameko Futurity Stakes.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

DIEGO VELAZQUEZ (Doncaster, 2.10)

A Spanish painter in the court of King Philip IV. Known for his paintings of the Spanish royal family plus many more of historical and cultural significance. Some of his best work is in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.

WATCH OUT FOR…

FLOORING PORTER (Cheltenham, 4.10)

The dual winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle (2021 & 2022), who was third in last season’s race, makes his novice chasing debut for trainer Gavin Cromwell, with Keith Donoghue in the saddle for the first time.

Flooring Porter (front) could be one to watch at Cheltenham in the 4.10 on Saturday afternoon

HORSES FOR COURSES

EMPIRE STEEL (Kelso, 1.29) has run four times at the track, winning three times and finishing a three-quarter-length second on his other start.

TRAINER TARGET

Irish trainer John McConnell has won the William Hill Epic Weekend Free Bet Novices’ Hurdle twice in the last three years. He runs French import LISNAMULT LAD (Cheltenham, 3.35).

PERFECT PARTNERS

Amateur jockey Ben Sutton has ridden four winners from seven rides for Fergal O’Brien to show a £1 level stake profit of +£3.00. He rides BEFORE MIDNIGHT (Cheltenham, 1.15) for the trainer.

BEST FOR FAVOURITES

Six favourites have won the 2.10 at Doncaster in the last decade.

TOP PRIZEMONEY EARNERS

CHELTENHAM: 4.10 FLOORING PORTER — £571,813

DONCASTER: 3.50 EUCHAN GLEN — £570,374

KELSO: 1.29 CORACH RAMBLER — £686,451

Best Bets – By Steve Ryder

In the 3m 1f handicap chase at Cheltenham (2.25), Lord Accord (NAP) bids to win back-to-back renewals with the ground in his favour. A four-and-a-half-length winner of the race last season on good ground, the Neil Mulholland trained eight-year-old runs here off a mark of 132 which is only 1lb higher than in 2022. The gelding also has the benefit of a prep run over his rivals.

Palmar Bay (NB) (Doncaster 1.35) looks to have been leniently treated on his handicap debut off an opening mark of 88. This colt beat subsequent Group Two winner Jasour — who is now rated 108 — at Salisbury in May.

The Wizard of Odds – By Chris Baker

1.15 CHELTENHAM

GUY should have a fitness edge over today’s rivals after his comfortable victory at Fontwell three weeks ago. He’ll be well suited by ground conditions and will carry just 10-3. 5/1

Undersupervision (pictured) is 7/1 to impress in the 2.25 at Cheltenham on Saturday afternoon

2.25 CHELTENHAM

UNDERSUPERVISION was placed in a Grade Three contest at this track on his reappearance last season.

His best subsequent effort saw him beaten by a neck at Doncaster in March. 7/1

2.45 DONCASTER

BALLYMOUNT BOY (nap) drops in class after showing a good level of form this summer, including a second-place finish in the Group Two Richmond Stakes behind the unbeaten Vandeek. 9/4
